Happy Fourth of July! One annual holiday tradition is Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. The contest takes place today at 12 noon in Coney Island, New York and will be televised live on ESPN.
According to archives, the Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest was first held in 1916, the year Nathan's opened on Surf Avenue. The contest has been held each year since then, except in 1941, when it was canceled as a protest to the war in Europe, and in 1971, when it was canceled as a protest to civil unrest and the reign of free love.
The Nathan's Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest consists a group of 20 steely-eyed individuals lined up behind a 30-foot table at Nathan's flagship restaurant on Surf Avenue in Coney Island. Crushed by fans and media, the competitors begin the historic 12-minute contest. This year's contest may have been the most highly anticipated match-up in the event's storied 93-year history.
The event, which has become an integral part of America's celebration of Independence Day, will pit two-time champion Joey Chestnut against six-time champion Takeru Kobayashi. In 2008, the world watched as Chestnut and Kobayashi battled it out in an exhilarating five hot dog overtime. Chestnut won, but Kobayashi immediately vowed to return to reclaim the Coveted Mustard Yellow Belt, the most revered award in
the world of competitive eating.
