A beret is a soft round cap, usually of wool felt, with a flat crown, which is worn by both men and women and usually associated with France. The history of the beret extends as far back as the Middle Ages, but its exact origins remain unknown. Berets are worn by many military and police units, and in some countries are particularly associated with elite units, but berets are also worn as a fashion accessory. The beret can be worn in many different ways for a wide variety of looks from adventurous to sedate.
