Remembering John F. Kennedy, Jr. on the 10th anniversary of his tragic death

Today is the 10th anniversary of the small plane crash that killed John F. Kennedy, Jr., the Son of Camelot, his wife, Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren Bessette. The trio was en route to Kennedy's home in Martha's Vineyard to drop off Lauren, then John and Carolyn were planning to fly to Hyannisport for his cousin Rory's wedding. When the plane never arrived on the island, the Coast Guard was alerted, setting off a five-day search that ended in tragedy. The man who was once a paparazzi magnet and crowned by People magazine as the "sexiest man alive" was dead at 38.

Born in 1960, the son of President John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy, JFK Jr. spent his early years living in the White House with his older sister, Caroline, and was known to an adoring public as "John-John." After his father was assassinated in 1963, the family moved to New York City, where John Jr. attended private school, then headed to the prestigious Brown University, and NYU Law School. Instead of following in his dad's footsteps, in 1995 he decided to start his own magazine, called George. "I've been lucky enough to have a lot of opportunities, and there is sort of this inherent energy associated with it," he said at the time.

At a July 23, 1999, memorial service, Kennedy was eulogized by his uncle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., who noted that his nephew died too early, just as his father had, when he was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in 1963. "We dared to think...that this John Kennedy would live to comb gray hair, with his beloved Carolyn by his side," the senator said. "But, like his father, he had every gift but length of years."

One of the most iconic images in American history: On Nov. 25, 1963 -- his third birthday -- John Jr. salutes the casket of his father, who was assassinated three days earlier.
